Emergency workers responded about 9 a.m. to the Hawthorne Garden Apartments in the 100 block of Rock Road in Hawthorne on a report of a collapse, according to Fire Chief Joseph Speranza.

“A portion of the first floor had collapsed into the basement, compromising the utilities,” Speranza said in a statement posted to Facebook.

“The remainder of the building was evacuated along with other buildings with utilities affected,” Speranza said.

No injuries were reported. ABC7ny.com said four units were compromised and an investigation found a stress crack on another section of the building, which prompted officials to evacuate the entire building.

Fire officials said a structural engineering company was called to help the borough assess the damage to the building.

Hawthorne police told NJ Advance Media pressure from recent rains apparently destroyed the back wall to four units of the building, possibly leading to the collapse.
